ITO Three Stars and OHL Power Rankings: Week 25

With the playoffs now officially upon us, we have said goodbye to four Ontario Hockey League teams, as the Erie Otters, Kingston Frontenacs, Peterborough Petes, and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds have all packed it in until next season. For the remaining sixteen teams, the real season is set to begin, and as we speak, players around the province are preparing for the first of four potential wars on the road to the coveted J. Ross Robertson Cup.

This week, we’ll take a look back at the last week, as we announce the final edition of the ITO weekly Three Stars. We’ll also show you where each team finished the season on the OHL Power Rankings.

ITO Three Stars

1. Garret Sparks (Guelph Storm) – The recent trend of a goaltender taking top honors in our weekly top selections continues again this week, as Garret Sparks was a huge part of the Guelph Storm’s success in locking up a playoff spot this past week. On Friday night, Garret would stop all 28 shots faced in a whitewashing of the Owen Sound Attack, and he would victimize the Attack again a night later in Owen Sound, stopping 32 of 33 shots in the Storm’s season finale. In his two games, Sparks would post a Goals Against Average of just 0.50, and his save percentage of .984 also topped all goaltenders over the past week. For that, Garret Sparks earns our final First Star selection of the season.

2. Andrew Yogan (Peterborough Petes) – Andrew Yogan was determined to make his final games in the Ontario Hockey League matter, even if the outcome, his Petes missing the playoffs, was already determined. Tuesday night, Peterborough would be officially eliminated from the post-season in a loss to Oshawa, but Yogan would register a pair of assists in the contest, before adding another helper on Thursday night in Niagara, another Petes loss. Andrew would make his final OHL game a memorable one Sunday evening in Oshawa, as he would score four goals as part of a five point night, as Peterborough would win in Oshawa. With four goals and eight points in three games, Andrew Yogan’s time in the league comes to an end with an ITO Second Star selection for week 25.

3. Michael Sgarbossa (Sudbury Wolves) The race for the Ontario Hockey League scoring title would go down to the final day this season, and Michael Sgarbossa did everything in his power to control his own destiny, locking up the crown, along with our ITO Third Star selection for the week. Tuesday night, Sgarbossa would rack up three points, all assists, in a shootout loss to Barrie, but Michael would be held off the scoresheet Friday night in Ottawa and Saturday in Belleville, two more Wolves’ losses. Michael would come up big when it mattered Sunday afternoon in Kingston, scoring three goals as part of a four point game. Sgarbossa finishes the season with 102 points, two clear of Ottawa 52-goal scorer Tyler Toffoli, and should be considered when we announce our ITO Player Of The Year Nominees.
