OHL 2nd Round Predictions

It is the second round of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs and there are 4 great series here. Some will say 2 ‘underdogs’ made it through or that 2 teams pulled off a shocking ‘upset’ to advance… well not me. There were no upsets in the first round. Sure if you looked at the teams on paper then you were blinded by the fact that the game is played… on the ice. But that is neither here nor there. I went 7 for 8 in the first round and I am proud of that. Will I go four for four in this round… probably not. The law of averages and karma dictates I will finish as good as Mike Farwell, my western conference expert, did on his selections. All joking and hoisting myself on a pedestal lets just quick review of the first round before I choose my selection for the second round.

So as you can tell… near perfection. Not bad. And yes point to all the sweeps in the east if you would like to say I am wrong. But I still ask the question. How many had Sudbury winning at all… thank you… and now to the main attraction. Lets start with the East again shall we.

Eastern Conference Playoff – Round 2

(1) Mississauga vs. (7) Sudbury

            if  you had to say there is an underdog in which I argued tons about. This would be a series with an underdog. A team that finished with 108 points on the season to 62 points. 46-point total difference or a 23 win differential… pretty impressive and you do have JP Anderson of the majors coming off of 180 plus minutes of shutout hockey. 215 minutes and 47 seconds of shutout hockey to be exact. And even though that is very impressive I still feel confident in saying the series will belong to the Sudbury Wolves. Unlike the Bulls the Wolves are healthy with no suspensions or worries other than getting the job done on the ice. Against a very potent Ottawa offense, the Wolves were able to put up monster numbers on Petr Mrazek who rarely has a bad game let alone 2 straight bad games.  Mrazek had a 5.63 Goals Against and a 868SV% not at all his usual numbers. And yes the Ottawa 67’s blue line was decimated by injuries but that is no excuse for the offence not to show up and play. Alain Valliquette has been the backbone of the team and as usual, the team goes as far as the goaltending can go. Alain’s numbers were not impressive either, even with 4 straight victories. Giving up 4.19Goals against and an 877 save percentage is not going to get the job done against the majors. With that in mind the underrated D of the Wolves has banded strongly as a unit and Josh McFadden has practically made everyone forget about his -35 in the regular season… except me.  Michael Sgarbossa has been a spark plug along side Kuchin and Leivo, and throw in a healthy Eric O’Dell, Marcus Foligno, Mike Lomas and Michael McDonald you have an impressive 2 and a half lines the can go toe to toe with the Majors. On the flip side you have Mississauga with the ability to roll 4 very gritty lines led by Smith-Pelly, Shugg and brace. Chris DeSousa has paid dividends in his ability to come up with key goals and be able to shutdown the opposition’s top line just like in London. The back end for the majors boils down to a who’s who of talent with Michael D’Orazio and Brett Flemming leading the way. Stuart Percy is a stall worth back there along with Dylan DeMelo and Mark Cantin. The home ice and last change advantage will be key in this series, but since it is going 1-1-1-1 etc there will not be time to get cozy as fatigue will play a factor with the travel. But with all this we may finally get exciting Majors hockey because the Wolves will continue to press on despite being down 1 or 2 goals and the Speed that Sudbury possesses will help break that 1-4 trap we see so much out of Mississauga. I have to say that the victor of the series is going to be…

My Prediction: Sudbury in 6

(3) Niagara vs. (4) Oshawa

            For everyone who enjoys watching goals and a fast paced game with Hard hits, end to end chances and almost no sign for the goalie to succeed. This series is for you.  What is surprising right off the bat is that No IceDog is in the top 20 of Playoff scoring. Yes they only played 4 games, to the likes of Windsor, Erie, Kitchener and Plymouth played 7 games. But the offensive leader for Niagara is Darren Archibald with 5 goals and 6 points. Tied with Dougie Hamilton with 1 goal and 6 points, and an impressive +7 for Dougie and Jesse Graham. Throw that up against Oshawa’s top scorers of Christian Thomas, Tony DeHart, Andy Andreoff, Boone Jenner, Lucas Lessio, Nicklaus Jensen and Calvin De Haan who have… 13, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and 6 points respectively. The generals also boast 4 platers with a +/- of +7 or greater. Christian Thomas leading the way with a +12 rating.  And to all these stats I can clearly say… that was last round. And it doesn’t matter. What does matter is the fact that there are two highly offensive teams that are going to take to the ice for what will probably be a 7 game brawl. Niagara’s Mark Visentin, I believe has the goaltending edge over Oshawa’s Peter DiSalvo and that is the series again. Right there. The Niagara D of Hamilton, Graham, Gronvaldt, Rover, Doudera and Schwindt will have their hands full with all of Oshawa’s offensive talent and likewise with Oshawa. Defenceman De Haan, DeHart, Valentine, Sullentop, Maggio and Quinn will have their hands full with all of Niagara’s forward talent. A very tough series to call where the travel wont get the teams like the other Eastern series, but it will come down to the team that wants it more. And the way that they had to handle the Frontenacs and without Niagara having  Billingsley until game number 4 I have to give the advantage to Oshawa. But again, looking at who is between the pipes how do you ignore what Visentin has done, including his spectacular numbers of .75Goals against and a 977 save percentage vs. Brampton. This series is too close to call so it has to go to 7, and with that I select…

Western Conference Playoff – Round 2

(1) Owen Sound vs. (6) Plymouth

            Here is a series that not many people wanted to see… well I guess I did because I predicted it. But I look at the west as being Kitchener, London and Guelph… and we almost got all three American Based teams and the smallest market in the west. And don’t get me wrong it is great for the league when you can have this parity… bad for us viewers because there would be less games to watch. Thankfully for those of us who enjoy watching playoff hockey in Ontario we get at least 4 games from the west to watch… up to 7 I believe… and hey it is something. But onto the prediction of this series.  This is going to be a great series because you have 2 big teams that are going to be pounding the heck out of each other. You also have the finesse on both teams like OS’s Wilson, Hishon and Mignardi against PLY’s Noesen, Aleardi and Czarnik. Then there is the grit that matches up well in Attack forwards Shaw, Halmo, Heelis against Whalers Brown, DeVane, Livingston and Heard. As much as you can talk about the D of Blacker and Petgrave of Owen Sound against Plymouths Schmitz and Levi. I really feel the D is gonna look like a bunch of chumps for both teams. And goaltending is all about $cott ‘Money’ Wedgewood topping whoever is across the ice from him. Whether it is Zador, Stajcer or how about Jordan Binnington. As much as Owen Sound can bang with the best of them, this is another 1-1-1-1 series that is going to wear down the teams as much as the crash and banging will. With all this going on, statistically there is not much that separates the teams with the exception of… I want to say goaltending but Wedgewood was more lucky than good, despite coming up big when he had to. But also broke down easily in key moments. The only 100% fact that has to be taken into account is the X-factor Joey Hishon. He is always going to be the X-Factor and London did a great job of shutting him down as he was limited to 5 points in 6 games… a huge success based on ability and regular season output. I still feel that the Whalers ‘upset’ victory over the Rangers is nothing more than the better team winning and I still say they are the better team. But it is the X-Factor that is making me ramble on. Powerplays are even at 15% (3/20) for PLY compared to OS’s 14.3% (5/35) in the first round. Penalty kill identical numbers again 85% (6/40) for PLY against Kitchener and the Attack had an 84%(8/50) success rate on the PK against the London Knights. Goaltending stats favour OS because Zador is perfect with 48 saves in 48 shots for 1.000 SV%, a 0.00 Goals against and 2 victories…  to a 3.05GAA and 928SV% for Whalers Scott Wedgewood. The bubble has to burst on Zador soon and this series will bring him down to earth so to speak. But as I said when predicting the East…. Stats mean nothing in the next round. So going by gut feel a lone I am going to have to say…

My Prediction: Plymouth in 6

(2) Saginaw vs. (4) Windsor

            here we are in another battle for the Spitfires who even though are your back to back OHL Champions and back to back Memorial Cup Champions are actually doing the impossible this time around… so to speak. The first round is the first round where anything can happen and luckily for the Spitfires the Team USA Jack Campbell showed up to play opposed to Spitfires Jack Campbell. In Saginaw no one could find Mavric Parks. NO ONE! A 4.47 Goals against and a 872SV% is not even close to his outstanding regular season numbers.  2.94GAA and 914SV% if you don’t remember. Saginaw was able to win all 4 of their games by a combined 4 goals. 4 one goal victories over Guelph. The Dominant Spirit team that went 14-16 since the trade deadline including dropping 2 of their last 3 regular season games including one against Windsor. On the positive note for Saginaw Josh Shall has found his scoring touch, leading the Spirit with 5 goals against the Storm while Szwarz, Trochck and Saad each had 7 points with 3 other teammates having 5 or more points in their 6 game series. A total of 7 players with 5 or more points. Shows that the Spirit were sharing the wealth so to speak. For Windsor a total of 11 players with 4 or more points. Including Tom Kuhnhackl who leads with 5 goals and 11 points. Ryan Ellis and Criag Dunnick will be logging a lot of minutes against the Spirit and other then their offensive numbers, the Spits blueline pair have been poor defensively so to speak with a combined +1 rating between them.  There is a lot of playoff experience on Windsor which is generally an over riding factor. Include the experience of Jack Campbell in big game situations and the deck is stacked against the Saginaw Spirit… I am still not a Jack Campbell believer though and Windsor is LUCKY to get by Erie. Veteran leadership from Zack Kassian has been absent since February, and almost cost the Spitfires as he went a -5 in games 5, 6 and 7 of the series including a -3 in Game 7. If Kassian continues to have these problems the Spitfires may be in a big hole. The only advantage is that Saginaw is not a high energy fast paced team compared to the Erie Otters. Mavric Parks can always bounce back and this is the series he does. The 7-8 deep forwards that the Spirit have should be able to take down the giant line of Koko, Kuhnhackl and Carrick. The Defence for Saginaw will have to really pick things up and if there was ever a time to do it, it would be with the Back-2-Back champions standing infront of them and the Western Conference title. Again a very close series as it should be but at the end of it all… another gut feeling.

My Prediction: Saginaw in 7

So how is that for throwing a perfect bracket away… although I think the only safe bet would be Mississauga but I am going to stand by this and head down in flames if it happens. And rightfully so. And I expect to hear about it as well. Let the second round begin.

Game 5 – Plymouth and Kitchener Game Review

KITCHENER - In a do or die game you expect certain things to happen. You expect a fresh energy from the team that needs to win. The home crowd cheers louder. And since it is do or die… expect the unexpected. Friday night in Kitchener was just that.

            On the heels of  the media learning that Mike Morrison would start the game instead of Brandon Maxwell you knew tonight was different. The previous 4 games had the fans calling for Maxwell’s head and dying to get Morrison in net. And in an elimination game you may as well shake it up. When the starting lineup for the Rangers was announced, a tremendous uproar filled The Aud as the sellout crowd of 6,038 let it known that they want Mike Morrison.

            The game begins and before you can count to 10, just 9 seconds in, a puck is behind Mike Morrison. WOW! Not the start you wanted as a Kitchener Rangers team and definitely not what Steve Spott had in mind when he decided to start MikeMo. Fortunately for Kitchener they were able to get on the board very quickly after as 2 minutes and change later Michael Catenacci gets the home crowd on their feet to tie the game at one. With 17 minutes left in the first period there were two thoughts of how this game would go. Either this completely tilted the ice in the favour of the Rangers... or this is going to be a shootout. It was the former.

            The remainder of the first period the ice was heavily slanted in the favour of the Rangers as they poured on the pressure to the point that PLY goalie $cott Wedgewood may have gotten into his groove, which would be dangerous if that was the case. Tobias Reider and Michael Catenacci, just cut up the Whalers blue line, they got into and dominated the PLY zone with ease when they had the puck on their stick.  The period ends 1-1 with Kitchener posting 23 shots on Scott ‘Money’ Wedgewood to Plymouth’s 13 shots on MikeMo.

            The second period was like much like the first where early action will help control the play as Jason Akeson gets his first of the playoffs, and first goal since February 21^st, to give the Rangers the lead and slant the ice in the Rangers favour. A seeing eye shot where he used PLY Nick Malaysa as a screen to beat Scott Wedgewood. After a pair of offsetting penalties, KIT Ryan Murphy has his helmet knocked off and has a brain cramp as he sort of tries to make a play in the Rangers Defensive zone and he gets called for Illegal Equipment, ie: playing without a helmet. Rules does state you have to get off the ice right away and Murphy thought a little too long before making a decision and this now opened the door for Plymouth who had a 4 on 3 for 1:46. All they needed was 24 seconds as Stefan Noesen with an almost Trick Shot off a rocket that just found the small hole on the short side to tie the game back up. After 40 minutes the game is tied at 2 and the Rangers have at least 20 minutes to score more than PLY or they will be packing up their gear for the summer. Personally I did not want to see that, not because I am cheering for KIT but because on Thursday night I was in Brampton and saw how hard it is for these kids to say goodbye after a long 4 year OHL Career. Maybe I am getting soft at my old age.

            The start of the third found Rangers Captain Gabriel Landeskog can be seen standing on the bench and giving his team a pep talk, apparently a recurring theme that I missed until now.  Much like the first period Plymouth struck early and 34 seconds in to the third Robbie Czarnik gives the Whalers the lead… the last one that the Whalers would have in this game. from that goal on the Rangers found a new gear, similar to the one in the first period. Whether it was the do or die mentality kicking in, or maybe the words from their Captain or maybe that none of them are Golfers they were able to dig deep and keep the puck in the Whalers zone for the entire period. And it was none other than Jason Akeson, the OA player who does not want his junior career to be over, who ties the game back up at 3 off a deflection from the point and nets it in the back of an empty cage over a sprawled Wedgewood. The goals are all dramatic and you can feel it in the Aud.  The 4^th Rangers goal is most likely the death blow as Ryan Murphy slaps the puck in off the PLY End boards and it runs through the crease as Wedgewood does a 360 only to see Jerry D’Amigo throw it in the net and give the Rangers a one goal lead. Michael Catenacci scores his second of the game and it is all but over for the Whalers as they are down by 2 with 2 to play. What is a team to do? Well you pull the goalie and with Wedgewood on the bench and with the faceoff in the Rangers zone, after a scramble in front of the net Alex Aleardi is able to make it 5-4 and create some drama with 40 seconds left in the game. That is as close as the Whalers would get as Jason Akeson scores his third of the game, an empty netter to guarantee the Rangers will fight another day. Well Saturday at the least.

            All in all, it was a very exciting game which saw a lot of emotional ups and downs and the Rangers offense was predominant as they controlled the play more often than not. Kitchener was able to not only break through the Plymouth defenders as Catenacci and Reider did on numerous occasions but also pinned the Whalers deep in their zone to apply their pressure. With Plymouth’s size it was odd to see all 5 players on the ice below the faceoff dot and allow the Rangers puck moving defenceman all that time to set up and create havoc in front of Scott Wedgewood. On the other side of the coin, Plymouth is unbeaten at home in the playoffs and look to win game 6 on home ice and send the Rangers packing once and for all. Will the Whalers breakout and be able to match the Ranger intensity? Will Mike Morrison become the unquestionable star of the series by standing on his head tonight? Will this be the last time Akeson, Tipoff and Doornbosch dawn Ranger Blue? Questions to be answered later but as for game number 5. I stand up and applaud the Rangers on their performance when it is Do or Die.

Wolves complete series sweep with win over 67’s

OTTAWA – It’s all over for the Ottawa 67’s.   The Wolves scored 4 straight goals to beat the 67’s 5-3 in front of a disappointed home crowd of 6,047.  The win ended the 67’s playoff run as the Wolves swept the first round series 4-0 to secure a birth into the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

The 67’s came out of the gate with a lot of energy and controlling much of the pace of the game.  Shane Prince was left wide open on a 3-on-2 rush and made a great move to beat Valiquette to get the 67’s on the board first.

There was no love lost between these two Eastern Conference opponents as both teams continued to play very physical.  Jake Cardwell got into a lengthy tilt with Mike MacDonald.  With them still in the box, Marcus Foligno gets tossed out of the game after taking a 5 minute major for a check to the head of defenceman Adam Sedlak.  Sedlak was helped off the ice and did not return.  The hit will be reviewed and Foligno could face further disciplinary action.

The 5 minute penalty kill didn’t phase the Wolves as Michael Sgarbossa continued his dominance and scored shorthanded 2 minutes in to tie the game at 1 from a big one-timer from the point.  The Wolves would continue to kill off the major until Frank Corrado takes a penalty for holding. The 67’s would get the lead back when Dalton Smith scored right off the face-off.

Things were looking up for the 67’s.  Dalton Smith would score his second of the game at 14:03 in the second period to extend the 67’s lead to 3-1.  However, a couple minutes later, Joshua Leivo would score the Wolves second short-handed goal of the game to cut the lead to one.

Just under 6 minutes into the 3^rd period, Sgarbossa continued his hot hand and wrists one in from the slot for his second goal of the game.  This tied up the game and marked the second straight game the 67’s gave up a two goal lead.  Things would continue to get worse for the 67’s when the Wolves went up 4-3 midway through the 3^rd.  Josh McFadden notched his 4th of the playoffs off a shot from the point which deflected off of Martindale's stick and in behind Petr Mrazek.

A solid performance by Valiquette and a bit of help from the posts, from then on in the Wolves shut the door and dominated most of the play.  With the final seconds looming, Ottawa-native Eric O’Dell would seal the deal with an empty net goal.  As final buzzer sounded to end the game, it also sounded on the OHL careers of 67’s Captain Thomas Nesbitt and veteran leaders Cody Lindsay and Travis Gibbons. 

The Sudbury Wolves move on to face the top ranked Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.  The Wolves will open up round two on the road.  Dates and times will be announced by the OHL by Monday.

What is #FreeFarwell? And more importantly WHY!?!

            I guess it is only fair to warn you all that I am clearly biased. I am biased of players teams coaches broadcasters and analysts. The truth is so are you. You have your favourites and you have the people you love to hare and the people you flat out will not give the time of day. And I understand that as ‘media’ I am to be objectionable and unbiased and give everyone a fair opportunity. And that is what I do. You have the opportunity to be liked or hated by me. To sound like a genius or sound like a moron. Everyone has that opportunity. It is nothing new. I guess where I get ragged on is the fact that I ‘play favourites’ with my radio show or my twitter account. Fair enough. I respect those opinions and I disagree. When I fight with KIT fans for example it is as a London Knights fan. Not as the IN THE O… guy. The only thing I have done as the IN THE O… guy which should raise ire of people is the #FreeFarwell Campaign.

            I believe I am… in fact I know I am the creator and architect of this campaign. If you search #FreeFarwell in twitter I am clearly posting the first hashtag. The question I get from many is what is it? what are we freeing farwell from? Doesn’t he do the radio broadcasts though? Well I will tell you what it is and you an decide to be apart of the #FreeFarwell campaign or not.

            The campaign was started just recently not even a week ago I believe where I got entirely fed up with the TV broadcasts of the Kitchener Rangers on RogersTV. As people I am sure Gary Hahn and Andrew Macklin are great people but as Broadcasters for television I am disgusted. My biggest pet peeve is calling players by the wrong name. that is a no no . seriously. You have tons of time to prepare and you either are ignorant or you don’t know the difference between 6 and 8 as in 16 Garrett Meurs and 18 Alex Aleardi of the Plymouth Whalers. Which according to Gary are interchangeable. GET THE PLAYERS CORRECT!

            But I digress a bit. Rogers apparently thought Mike Farwell and Torch were not the combination that could lead a Rangers broadcast well Gary Hahn and Andrew Macklin are failing. Poorly. So starting the #freeFarwell campaign is a way to show my displeasure. And apparently I was not alone. Many people feel the same way including one suggestion to simulcast Don and Mike on both 570News and the RogersTV broadcast.

            So there you go. Everyone who has supported this campaign from the beginning feels the same way as I do. To those who supported and didn’t know why. Now you know. And to those who want to continue the support to bring back Mike Farweel to the TV broadcast keep those #freeFarwell tags coming. All support is appreciated and hopefully someone will listen. Remember it is Community TV and if the Community wants it, the community should get it.

            To all those people, from rangers fans, to media, to teams, to people on twitter, I know I can speak for Mike Farwell when I say, ‘thank you for all the support very appreciated’

            And as this is the final day of the #FreeFarwell campaign, OFFICIALLY, you can still support with signs, t-shirts, face paint etc at Game 5 tomorrow in KITCHENER. Make noise be heard and Support #freeFarwell

And to those haters who believe I am jealous beause I am not on tv. Search the March14th blog to see my first television broadcast. If I can do it… any idiot can do it. But not everyone can perfect it like Farwell. 

GAME DAY PREVIEW: Sudbury Wolves (7) @ Ottawa 67’s (2) – Game 4

Sudbury leads series 3-0
An unlikely hero, Josh McFadden scored three times including the game tying goal with 16.6 seconds left in the extra frame to lead the Sudbury Wolves to a 5-4 defeat of the favoured Ottawa 67’s.  It was easily the 67’s best game of the series, but the Wolves were able to capitalize on their chances as the 67’s ran into some penalty trouble in the final period.
The Ottawa 67’s return home for their first actual home game at the RONA Centre in this series.  Game 1 was played at a neutral Scotiabank Place site in Kanata, Ontario due to a scheduling conflict at the RONA Centre.  The 67’s may be down 3-0 in the opening round vs the Sudbury Wolves, but they can look to their regular season home record for some hope.  The 67’s were unstoppable at home posting a 25-5-4, good for third best in the league.
It might not look good right now for the 67’s, but they have some stats on their side.  The 67’s longest losing streak of the season was only 4 games and happened once when Ottawa was in the middle of a 6-game road swing back in the end of February.  They went on to win 5 straight games and 9 games undefeated in regulation.  Meanwhile, the Wolves have only been able to string together a 4 game winning streak once this season which happened back at the beginning of February.
While it’s not common for teams to comeback from being down 3-0, it is not impossible.  Just last season the Windsor Spitfires rallied from a 3-0 deficit to the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL Western final. The Spitfires went on win the J Ross Robertson Cup (OHL title) and Memorial Cup.
Keys to the game for both teams would be to come out of the gate early.  The Wolves will look to silence a boisterous Ottawa crowd while the 67’s will look to get an early lead to build off momentum.  The Wolves will need to continue to capitalize on their chances, while the 67’s need to stay out of the box.  While the Wolves PP has not been as good in the playoffs, they were still ranked #1 in the league during the regular season and have managed to capitalize on them in clutch moments in the game.
Though 6 points in 3 games is nothing to scoff at, Tyler Toffoli and the 67’s big guns need to step up.  The top line has only managed to combine for a total of 10 points and Shane Prince has yet to record a point in his two games so far.
They may be down, but they are not out.  As Dalton Smith tweeted, “In shock. But still believing. Its a huge hill to climb. Let's take it one step at a time.”  And that’s what the 67’s will have to do – take it one game at a time.
